What is the difference between an Off-Cycle pay-run and issuing a Manual Check?
Utilizing Execupay and unsure on whether to issue a manual check or run an unscheduled off-cycle payroll? Read below to learn the distinction between the two.
Manual Checks
A Manual Check is going to be a physical check that is printed onsite and handed off to the employee. You may run into a few scenarios where you may need to issue a manual check.
- Terminating an employee. Depending on your state's compliance laws, you may have to disperse a final paycheck in a physical paper check form.
- If you have an employee that will be coming into the office tomorrow to pick up a check that will need to be cashed that same day, you would issue a manual check.
- An error occurred and a payroll correction was needed. Sometimes issuing a manual check can be the quickest way to settle the issue.
Generally you will see a manual check being issued due to an urgent matter.
Note: if you issue a manual check with Execupay that money will be pulled out on your company's next scheduled pay run. Issuing a manual check will not generate a paystub in GoCo for your employee to view.

Unscheduled Off-Cycle Payroll
Off-Cycle Payrolls will utilize ACH and issue a direct deposit to the designated employee. They will typically take 2 days to process. A few examples where you may need to use Off-Cycle Payroll could be some of the following...
- An employee was terminated and you need to pay them through direct deposit outside of the regularly scheduled pay-run.
- You want to issue bonuses/commission outside of the regularly scheduled pay-run.
- A surprise reimbursement! For example on employee appreciation day you want to give the employees of your organization $100 each and want to surprise them with that gift on the day off.
- An error occurred and a payroll correction was needed.
Check out how to run an unscheduled payroll here!
Things to note:
- You can turn off Direct Deposit on the powergrid using the flower pot symbol
- You can perform an off-cycle pay-run that is paper check (Execupay prints and mails check or you can cut in house)
