Most companies in New Mexico must start paying unemployment insurance tax (and can register)once they have:

  • Paid $450 in wages during a calendar quarter or;
  • Had at least one New Mexico employee working for any part of the week, for 20 or more different weeks during a calendar year.

Your business type (general, non-profit, etc) can impact when the company is responsible for paying this tax. We recommend contacting the agency to confirm when the company will be liable.
